Y11 History

In Year 11, students study Germany, up until the Spring, followed by revision and exam preparation.

Starting with the end of World War One and the consequences, students will build upon their bridging topic from the beginning of year 9 and will look at the actions of the Nazis and the changes brought to Germany, in more depth.

Students will then move on the study the rise of Nazis and look at how Hitler was able to transform from a shy ex-soldier to a dictator, who caused a world war. Students will study how he conducted both legal and illegal work to gain power, from manipulation to creating death camps. The social side of life in Nazi Germany is also studied and students will learn about how life changed for different groups of people under the control of the Nazis and compare the quality of life to that under the Weimar Republic.

The study of Germany is heavily source based – skills that the students already have acquired from previous topics. The aim of the sources is to get the students to use their critical thinking skills and assess a variety of sources, to form judgements about the actions of the Nazis.
