Y8 Music

We believe that students should gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music and can use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. Our music curriculum will give students a chance to:

  • Recognise features of various genres;
  • Develop the confidence to perform;
  • Use ideas creatively to compose music in a variety of styles and structures;
  • Demonstrate tolerance of others’ opinions and ideas;
  • Take ownership of their own creative work;
  • Work with others to solve problems;
  • Support and show respect to others when performing;
  • Use a variety of musical instruments and Music Software;
  • Be involved in all aspects of music making.

We have a new state of the art music room with several practice rooms where students can develop their skills further.  Our peripatetic teachers offer a wide selection of instruments for students to learn.  We also have a rich music enrichment programme that encompasses many musical styles and there are many opportunities for students to perform here at De Lacy.

Our Year 8 Curriculum Content

Students will explore music from a variety of styles, genres and traditions, from at home and across the globe. They will explore The Blues and Jazz, how it developed and how it influences other styles of music. They will learn how to play a 12 bar blues including how to base an improvisation on a given theme. Students will build on their work with digital audio workstations by looking at how to compose using the techniques of sequencing and recording music live. Students will also look at chords and chord progressions including the difference between major and minor chords. They will use existing chord sequences to create their own versions and arrangements, and use keyboard skills to play these.
