Students at Wakefield College Skills Exchange

Sixteen students from De Lacy Academy attended a "Give Construction a Try" taster day at Wakefield College Castleford Campus. This was organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for students aged 14-16 and aimed to inspire and raise awareness of the diversity of roles and opportunities the industry has to offer.

Students participated in a selection of over 40 technical and hands on construction activities including joinery, roof tiling and the use of drones in construction.

Ben is delighted to have been offered an apprenticeship when his clay skills impressed Ian Martinson, a heritage craftsman/sculptor from Weinerberger. Ben was presented with a signed rugby shirt from Rugby stars Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Alex Simmons, stars from Rugby a.m who hosted the day.

Ben's report;

"During the Give Construction a Try event I experienced many different jobs such as electrician, joiner, plasterer and brick layer. The best part of the day for me was clay making, where the tutor singled me out and offered me an apprenticeship for when I am 16. If I was to do the day again I would savour it more because the day went so fast".
